‘Morning Coffee’ is a painting based on a ritual and a place. Andrew Fish and his wife were at an artist residency in Gloucester, MA (USA) that abutted an old quarry. Every morning they would make coffee and sit on the edge of the quarry, looking out and watching the day begin. It became a ritual that was comforting, grounding, and inspiring “It cleared our minds and helped us focus on what we wanted to do that day”. It also helped them to appreciate the place where they were, noticing details in the way the wind blew through the trees and the songs the birds would sing. It was also a chance to meditate on the quarry itself, a historic worksite where generations of workers harvested the rock for an International market, now filled with placid water. “The figure in the painting is based on my wife but also acts as a stand-in for anyone. I think this kind of morning ritual is universal and relatable, the small ceramic mug of coffee keeping the individual company and nourishing them with warmth and energy while they plan out the day ahead”.
