“For the best part of my career thus far, since my success in The BP Portrait Award, I have been showing and selling in prestigious London galleries.  I have been waiting for a space up North to show my works and am now happily represented by ARTZU Gallery.

I have lived on a terraced Sheffield street for 16 years and many of my pieces draw from Northern cultural references, I needed a space where my paintings could truly resonate with the culture and surroundings that they depict.

Andrew Hunt – St Petersburgh

Born in Chester in the 70’s and now living and working in Sheffield I have been painting for gallery exhibition for the past 18 years. A trained illustrator/graphic designer and even one-time ‘Chester’ pavement artist I have always had a desire to bring together my love of story telling and figurative painting.

As a young artist I was inspired by comic and graphic novel art, but I also developed a penchant for oil painting and soon began to marry the techniques of graphic illustrators and concept artists with fine art portraiture.

My figurative pieces are drawn from a subtle characterisation of Northern life, maintaining a delicate balance of being neither too twee nor gratuitously working class and too gritty. Using a unique aesthetic they transform these romantic narratives of the every-man into the epic.
With an eye for only the appropriate details the paintings are asserted with a love of paint, of mark making and brush-stroke. Drips and runs and bare canvas allow for the anatomy of the painting to be laid bare. Not only are the pieces intended to harbour thematic narratives but the story of the painting itself is presented on the canvas.

Often the themes are light, anecdotal with an air of nostalgia. With humour and pathos the paintings become visual vignettes. I like the idea that the pieces contain slightly surreal compositions as in “Capenhurst” with intriguing and playful imagery. In “Boy Wonder” I am experimenting with abstraction in paint inspired by urban paint forms with the intention of heightening the energy and vibrancy of the image.
Most of the works are designed to have gravitas as opposed to sit passively, they become overt figurative statements with a strong sculptural quality.”
