This bronze sculpture by Carol Peace is a contemporary work of art which simultaneously operates as a bird bath. Both beautiful and functional, 'Bird Bath' is imbued with character, and would compliment any outdoor space. A practicing sculptor of 20 years, Carol Peace works predominantly with bronze to create tactile yet playful sculptures, specialising in the human form. A draughtsman as much as she is a sculptor - Peace firstly works with clay as though she's sketching - it is a direct way to translate her initial ideas into something tactile and 3D. These clay sculptures are then cast into bronze and resin, turning these fluid forms into sturdy, permanent statement pieces. This process of working with clay is vital to her work - it ensures that the initial mark making is immediate and intuitive, like drawing with charcoal onto paper. Although her sculptures have a distinctive airiness to them, they are made from resilient materials, which could withstand any of the natural elements. “The pace of the sculpture is defined by the texture. Rough textures and lines emulate rhythms of movement while detailed work creates a feeling of stillness and intimacy” Peace's oeuvre boasts an organic, earthy colour palette, which would seamlessly compliment any environment, both inside or outside. Her main inspiration stems from human interaction and human activity day to day, and her works are always open to interpretation, allowing us to apply our own meanings and narrative. With enlarged hands and feet, Peace's figures feels grounded, whilst their elongated limbs create a sense of movement and freedom. Her works are open, freeing, and encourage their viewer to open their minds, to find themselves in the work. How do you view this piece? Who could this figure be? This piece would bring a sense of life and to any space it resides - it is undoubtedly a conversation starter. Its neutral palette means that it would adapt to any space - be it a garden, a contemporary art gallery, a business space or domestic home - it is a versatile, functional and distinctive work of art that would make a worthwhile investment.
