The Body Fluctuation When a Child Becomes a Woman 1 by Karenina Fabrizzi

This series of works by Karenina Fabrizzi is based around the concept of how the female body changes and fluctuates over time. Inspired by watching her niece grow up, Fabrizzi became inspired to explore the fragility of this transition into adulthood, portrayed through oil on canvas.

This series of works by Karenina Fabrizzi is based around the concept of how the female body changes and fluctuates over time. Inspired by watching her niece grow up, Fabrizzi became inspired to explore the fragility of this transition into adulthood, portrayed through oil on canvas. To Fabrizzi, this transition into womanhood is mysterious, enigmatic, and both freeing yet entrapping all at once. It's these endless juxtapositions that make this topic so fascinating for Fabrizzi to explore, in a way that's both conceptual and physical. Capturing both the beauty and the pain, this piece portrays a lone female figure, emerged in botanical imagery. Framed by horizontal black lines that create both a sense of entrapment and protection - it's as though Fabrizzi has frozen a moment in time; capturing this young girl before she enters a period of drastic change. "I was trying to catch that specific moment that we all have when you realise you are not a child anymore… and this passage from being a little girl to being a woman” This piece perfectly captures the conflict of these changes. The transitional time between childhood and adulthood is tender - there's a sense of wanting to hold on to an old version of the self, whilst simultaneously embracing the changes. This piece captures the tension between these two versions and the feelings that come with it, in a way that's both dark and beautiful. A poetic and visually stunning work of art, this is an example of Fabrizzi's more painterly, defined pieces. The sporadic detailing of the figure contrasts effectively with the soft background and neutral tones, with pops of colour bringing a balance to the overall composition. Like many of Fabrizzi's works, although it is aesthetically beautiful, it has a thought-provoking edge to it, which leaves us yearning to know more. A dark and delicate work of art, any piece from this collection would make a worthwhile investment, and a valuable addition to any contemporary art collection, space, or home.
