The Ark - to be set upon a course of no return, to have an uncertain future, looking for a country that is new! Presented amidst hues of electric blues, crimson reds and fiery yellows.

Ominously titled, Nick Coley's 'The Ark' presents an abstracted sea of electric blues, crimson reds, and fiery yellows. Perhaps a modern depiction of Noah's Ark? Or perhaps a group of explorers, set upon a course of no return? Through a myriad of visceral brush marks and coarse textures, a boat appears in a whirlwind of colour, carrying a group of mysterious figures. Who are they? Where could they be heading? Both vague yet crystal clear - this is a vivid piece which is full of exciting contradictions which leave us yearning to know more. Bold pops of colour adorn this dynamic piece, guiding our eye in, out and around this tactile composition. Coley's oeuvre often takes on classical influences, including the histories of Ancient Greece and various religious tales. Working with a toolkit of brushes, a Dremel, etching tools and more, Coley works onto one side of Perspex or glass, and the final image is reversed and viewed through the other side. This etching, scraping and build-up of paint creates depth and tactility, and allows the light to bounce off and protrude into each etch and crevice. “Incorporating collage to dramatic effect, his wealth of experience shows and shines with the confidence that can only come through fearless experimentation with both composition and his materials”
